Thanksgiving Day is an ancient holiday created by the American people. It is also a time for family gatherings. At first, there was no fixed date for Thanksgiving, which was decided by the American States on an ad hoc basis. It wasn’t until 1863, after American independence, that President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. In 1941, the United States Congress officially designated the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day. The Thanksgiving holiday usually lasts from Thursday to Sunday. In 1879, the Canadian Parliament declared November 6 a day of Thanksgiving and a national holiday. In the years that followed, the date of Thanksgiving changed many times, until on January 31,1957, the Canadian parliament declared the second Monday of October every year as Thanksgiving Day.
